Hello, hello, yes, happy New Year, wonderful. I need your help. My goal for the winter break is to colour the backgrounds for my film (which is still title-less because I'm not going to name it "Balance"). But I still have much to learn about the realm of colour. Just read the text and post some hints and help me out if you can.

I want to be a better artist. I see the final product in my mind but when it comes time to draw what I think, something gets lost in trasmission from the brain to the hand. Call it a new years resolution or a daily mantra I've always had, whatever, I want to make great things.

Life drawings. Its been a while since I've posted. I think I almost went two months without making a new banner so from now on, I will change it once in a while. I forsee piles of work ahead of me and my priorities lie in my assingments. Unfortunately, I can't post that tiger banner because the hard drive it was saved on is now dead. unhappy.

This is the beginning of my last year at Sheridan. In total I've been here for almost five years (one year of Art Fundamentals four years of Animation). It doesn't seem that long ago when I was new to the school and lived in residence. I've met so many people and there are a few that I still have close ties with since my first year in 2007. That's the way life goes: we meet people then sometimes drift apart but I wish the best for everyone regardless if we've lost contact or not. Everything has not been sunshine and roses and this journey has also had its trying moments with people I had an odd time working with but again, that's life.

During the summer, I was interning at an animation studio in Halifax. I was doing animatics in Adobe Flash for a T.V. show and I can't say much about the project or post any work since it hasn't aired yet (it's set to release late this year or next year I'm not sure). That in itself was an interesting experience since what we (the other Sheridan interns and myself) were doing was for an acutal production. I was a little stressed about the work load since deadlines were tight and the characters were...interesting, but not everything I'll get to work on will be the kind of stuff I'm into. That said, there is something that needs to be addressed and that is:

The nature of childrens progaming right now. I grew up with shows totally different than what is being produced today (by studios world-wide). There is this facination with Adobe Flash which I still am trying to understand. I realize that its cheaper and quicker (which is the part that baffles me) but it looks too out of touch with the original way the craft was handled (paper to pencil). Yes, hand drawn stuff takes time and a certain level of skill but I'm afaid that the Flash trend will give the wrong impression of animation. Kids today are growing up with Flash and CG toons and if a random strager asks me what I do for a living and I reply "animation", they say "oh like the computer stuff".

The good thing about Sheridan is the curriculum is centered around hand drawn work. We barely touched Flash in fist year which at first, annoyed me but now I'm greatful they don't pamper us with computer stuff. I had to learn everything I know now about Flash at work and it doesn't take that long to figure out. Its relatively easy to use. The great thing about where I worked over the summer, is that the artists there are really talented! Their in house productions are so amazing! So lesson learned: learn to draw first because anyone can point and click and make an "animation" on the computer.

One last thing I want to touch up on (this post is already long enough) is animation show content. It has come to my attention that there is a predictable trend among childrens shows happening now, worldwide. The shows geared to boys generally have monsters and aliens and robots, transforming, or taking over, etc. and has the default blue-green colour palett. The shows targeted for girls, generally, are about sparkly fairies or princesses or and are overloaded with pinks purples. So nothing is original and these shows are churned out quicker than you can imagine. As someone who will hopefully be working in the industry next year, I want to work on something different than the cookie cutter model shows that are now the standard. I want to read a script and be glued to the action or plot progression. I want characters to feel real and not a dry-comedy shell. I want kids to glare at the T.V. with their mouth open in awe and say to themselves "When I grow up, I want to make cartoons!"

To my classmates in all four years, to other animation students studying in other schools across Canada and the world, and to the animation enthusiasts, lets be the change we want to see in the world. Lets share our talent and what we want to say. Lets remind the younger generation why this is one of the finest artistic mediums. Lets. Make. Cartoons.

I figured out why I've procrastinating on posting my group film work. I have to complile all my scnese in a Premier file on a really really really slow laptop, then upload it onto youtube only to relise that .mov will upload quicker so go back to Premier and convert it then go back and re-upload it with the slowest internet connection in the world. Horray!

Well this has been an interesting semester. Rememeber a few posts back I had a drawing of a hero guy and a layout? No? (Scroll down to see what I'm talking about). Well here you go, he's animated and the layout is coloured with a camera move. I present to you: the action analysis animation project featuring "Major Awesome" the most cocky superhero ever.

I leared a lot and wish there was more time to work on this. If I could have done this project differently, I would have done a shorter and more simple animation. Making a short simple animation would have meant that I could spend more time making a better peice. There are other annoying things that I would like to fix like the boiling shadow on his body and the foreground painting (among the mountain of other things that could be better).

I must say I'm also proud of my peers. Of the other action analysis' (what's the plural of analysis???) I have seen, they are really impressive! Good job everyone. Thanks to the teachers AND THE TECHNOLOGISTS who helped us out.

A Shocking Development

Terrible pun fully intended! This is some Art Direction and Desgings for the animated short film currently titled "Cloud City". This project has a team of 11 people (myself included) and this is the major assignment for third year that will be completed in April.

The initial story idea was created by Kyle and the designs for Doug the skydiver (the dude in the orange jump suit) and the Cloud Golem created by Nicole and Caroline respectively. This is just my take on the characters and how they interact.

Clydesdale horses were at the school last week. I wasn't about to pass up the opportunity to draw them. Its much more fun to draw animals when you don't have to submit the dawings for an assignment.

And, of course, the September banner. It is a pretty acurate depiction of my facial expression while watching Justice League/Justice League Unlimited in August. I wish I actually had JL action figures though.

Sun, sand, and all you can eat buffets! Jamaica is beautiful! Some enjoyed the buffet a little too much (the colour picture above of the lady in orange with a plate full of fries and a burger). I did not want to pass up the opportunity to draw the variety of faces and landscape there. Even the Flash and the Martian Manhunter was there...well no they weren't. That was how I wasted time on the plane.

I also want to mention that I bought the entire series of Justice League/Justice League Unlimited on DVD and it took me about a week and a half to get through. I went through a disc per day. Yes, its that good. Anyone who wants to watch a well done animated show should invest in the series. The design is wonderful (simple and undistracting) and the story and character development is MIND BLOWING. Farm animals...and uh...not farm animals

Some people go to petting zoos to pet the zoos. Other people draw the animals. I was the the latter.

For a zoo, there were more farm animals than actual exotic animals although they did have 3 lemurs (mamma daddy and little baby that clung to his mamma) 2 wallabies (but many more than 2 I did draw) African porcupines, and some large rodent things (they looked weird and had unpronucible names). Among the farm animals were the typical: goats, sheep, ponies and a donkey.

The water-colour wallabies are from memory. I wish I had a better scanner, they look better on paper.

Summer Sketch-a-ronies! Part 1

Welcome to what will be a 4 part series of sketches made by yours truly over the four months of "summer holiday". I feel the need to excuse the second picture (the one with the visible sketchbook binding) because I only like the leaning dude, the hip sunglasses man, and the tiny stick figures scattered about the page. The rest, I will admit, isn't the best but since so much of the page was filled, it would have been time consuming to snip the pics I like. Can someone show me how do do good caricatures, Please!!!! ha ha.

A Blast From the Past: The Bronco Project

What sarted off as a piece of old plywood, turned into a canvas with infinate possibilites... so many that I had to work out what I wanted the final product to look like. But every picture has got a story right?

A friend and I were cleaning out an old shed at work. There was lots to keep and chuck, including the plywood but I quickly snatched it and got my supervisor's approval to keep it. My friend drives a 1976 Ford Bronco and then the light bulb turned on! Paint the Bronco on the piece of wood!

Above are some mock-up of ideas I had for the painting. One day she hopes to paint her retro wheels turqoise (right now its red) so in a way, I brought her vision to life. The result looks better in person but I am still happy with it and so is she. I'm glad I had a chance to work with her this summer (and last) and providing me with some inspriation. By the way, that's not what her licence plate says so don't go looking for a car that says "Farr Out"

I had the idea for a little while then finally one day I decided to draw it out. Painting it took a while because I am still a novice photoshopper. Only after I started colouring did I realize the placement of the characters could have been better. I was aiming for a more drastic low angle tilt shot but I guess it was not to be.

I decided to make the best of my day off and went to the zoo. I feared that it was goint to rain. Every time a kiddie wagon with the plastic wheels rolled by, I thought it was the sound of thunder and the start of rain. The animals seemed happy...especially the cuddling monkeys. Latest Painting assignment! Description: pick a style from an existing background (perferably from an animated movie) and copy the painting, then take a excerpt from a story that describes an interior and paint it in the chosen style. I chose to copy a background from "Winnie the Pooh and the Blustery Day (1968)". I don't know the artist who painted the background but here is a link to the very top image above: http://animationbackgrounds.blogspot.com/search/label/POOH . The image underneath is my copy. Then I chose to do the excerpt from the first chapter of "The Hobbit" by J.R.R Tolkien. I had to pick and choose what to include from the detailed description of Bilbo's "Hobbit Hole". It turned out wider than I imagined so I guess its like a pan background. And now, after a week of a lack of sleep and an abundance of toil, I am going to get a good nights rest. Happy Easter!

This is my latest Character Design assignment that I handed in today. I was going for a graphic "cartoon-cool" retro kind of look. He's an eagle who is a sergeant. I decided to play on the idea of the egale being a magestic-like bird that I guess represents victory (hence his name is a play on words "Victory Eagle"). I am pleased with my work. feedback please!

A caricature of a cougar! This was on the title page of the zoo drawings assignment I handed in for life drawing last week. You can tell i still got a lot to learn about the polygon lasso tool in photoshop (chek the bad cut out on the bottom of the cougar). Overall, I am pleased with my drawing. A little Scooby-esq in the face though(gotta fix that!!!). I have a whole page of cougar gestures from the zoo. I'll post that soon.

Object Painting!

I find rendering drapery in any medium to be difficult, so I was a little apprihesive when starting this assignment. Using Arches paper and painting a striped surface really helped. The paper didn't warp as much because it had a heavier weight (I can't remember the weight right now) and strips serve as a guide when to change direction on the cloth. I was afraid of painting metallic objects too since I've never spent a lot of time learning how to capture reflective surfaces. I think this painting (done in gouache) turned out well...a little busy in the center and the folds in the bottom right corner are wonky...but the best I could do for now.

The modeling agency where confusing things happen

Just handed in this assignment today. It was supposed to be the layout for a modeling agency called "Too Beautiful Modeling Agency". This was a massively technical project filled with confusion and uncertainty...I wanted to pull my hair out, ha ha. It wasn't so much the drawing but separating the layers correctly and what colour I was supposed to use. So above is the first shot: a 12 field centre shot of the male model approaching the beautiful receptionist (by the way, this concept or the name was not my idea).

Second shot: 8 field centre. The model approaches the receptionist and they are talking.

The third image is the character design component of this assignment. I went waaaay to detailed so those of you who also did this assignment, you did not have to do a turn around. I didn't know that when i created the sheets and i was kinda in the mood to make it look good anyway. Its not the greatest model sheet, I do realize that there are some discrepancies in the designs.

Life on Planet K

On planet K, oddly shaped pink buildings dominate the cityscape. On planet K you are free to gaze out to the world on a sunny afternoon. On planet K, if the buildings aren't pink and look like the rejected design of a drunk archetect or have strange looking balconies, they are yellow bubbles that serve an undecided purpose.

Ok so the project was actually called "Life on Planet J" but I though K would be a little better. Just thought I'd add a splash of colour to the page. The colour images below were done in gouache. I think I need to work on not placing the main area of focus in the middle. Above the day/night paintings of the futuristic world are some sketches that lead up to the final product.

I reposted the images below because they were only able to be viewed in a small size. Hopefully they'll get bigger when you click on them.

Them Bones, Them Bones, Them Drrrrryyyy Bones

Here are the bone drawings done from first semester life drawing. It wasn't until later in the semester and the beginning of the second semester did I actually learn all the parts of the bones we drew. Hmmm, it really would have helped!

I am posting as much stuff as I can this week because its reading week. If I put off what I want to post to a later time...eergh, lets say it would be much easier to procrastinate then since I'll be busy.

Comparing Hands

Below are the hand drawings I drew for the animation portfolio 2008.

Here are the hand and feet drawings done for one of the first assingments in life drawing last semester.

Through drawing hands and feet over and over again, I think that I have improved. The next step would be drawing faster and building a better understanding of the hand. Each hand or foot took about an hour to draw (I can't remember the exact time...it was long though) and was through obeservation (these are my hands and feet). I still find drawing feet a bit challenging especially if I'm drawing from a model. They are just odd structures.

Why don't we start from the beginning? Below are some of the pieces I submitted for the Animation Portfolio in 2008. Carson the Caribou. I feel like I've come a long way from this in a year. If I could have changed anything, it would have been his face. In the front view, his mouth and head form an awkward tangent. His body also seems a little stiff.

These were drawings I did in my basement. I don't actually fix lighting structures. The second drawings details why. I like to aviod becoming BBQ'd Kirsten.

Alex the alley cat finds a box. The caracter was created by the Sheridan Animation Portfolio people, I just let my creativity do the rest of the work.

IMPORTANT: I like to put watermarks on my images to protect them from ending up somewhere else on the internet under someone else's name. All the above works and other works in the future are created by me unless otherwise specified.

Vitamin K is the organic substance responsible for aiding in blood-clotting. When i was searching for this definition (which has been summarized greatly by me) I realized that there are also two forms of vitamin K, which are K1 and K2. Green vegetables contain K1 and fish contains K2 (just a declaimer: don't quote me on this stuff. I am not a scientist so whatever i say bout vit K is stuff i just did a quick search on. to avoid some bad karma, i'll site it: "Vitamin." Microsoft® Student 2006 [DVD]. Redmond, WA: Microsoft Corporation, 2005.)...but enough of that.

I am more concerned with the lesser known tidbit on this vital vitamin. In addition to its blood-clotting properties, it is also the source of artwork by Kirsten. This very rare form of vitamin is called K10.
